Dr. Nyamemba Patrick Tumbo, EBS

Dr Tumbo is a career Insurance Business Leader, with over 30 years of experience, currently serving as the Group Chief Executive Officer of Sanlam Kenya PLC and as a Leadership Council member of Sanlam Pan Africa Life.

In Kenya and beyond, Dr Tumbo has immensely contributed to the growth and development of the local and regional insurance sector. Dr. Tumbo has played a key role in the development of guiding policies, legislative advocacy and peer leadership for the establishment of critical pillars to accelerate insurance penetration in Kenya in line with the Vision 2030 National Development Agenda and this earned him the commendation from the President of Kenya as an Elder of the Burning Spear, EBS

Dr. Tumbo is a Chartered Insurer and a Fellow member of the Society of Fellows of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London. Dr. Tumbo holds a Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration; a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Strategic Management, Marketing and International Business and a Bachelor of Commerce, Insurance Option. Dr. Tumbo has also attended several Corporate Governance, Leadership, Strategy and Advanced Management training programs from the Institute of Directors – Nairobi Kenya, IESE – Barcelona Spain, London Business School – London United Kingdom, Lagos Business School – Lagos Nigeria and the Strathmore Business School – Nairobi Kenya, among others.

Dr. Tumbo has a rare set of business acumen as demonstrated in the insurance sector, business development and corporate restructuring skills, having previously served at AIG Kenya, PTA Reinsurance (ZEP-Re), CIC Insurance Group and Jubilee Insurance Group in senior leadership positions. He is currently the Chairman & Trustee of the Insurance Training & Education Trust of Kenya and past Chairman of Association of Kenya Insurers. He is also the Chairperson, OESAI.

Dr. Tumbo has been honored with the ‘Africa Insurance CEO of the Year Award at AIO, the Insurance CEO of the Year and Life-Time Achievement Awards and the Gender Champion of the Year Award by the ILO and Federation of Women Entrepreneurs.

Managing Director of Minerva Re which is part of Minerva Risk Advisors under the Masawara Group of Companies. He is a holder of a Masters of Business Administration(MBA) and Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) Degree in Insurance and Risk Management from the University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe. Solomon Mavuka is also a holder of a Diploma in insurance through the Institute of Insurance Zimbabwe(IIZ)

A Dynamic leader with more than 20 years experience in insurance and reinsurance business in Zimbabwe and the Sub Sahara Africa region, has also done various courses throughout his career including Success Motivation International(SMI) Texas. He had the opportunity to be attached and work with various Aon global offices including Aon Benfield London.

Rose Wanda, ACII, AIISA, AIIK, is a Pan-African insurance leader, she currently serves as Secretary General & CEO of the Organisation of Eastern and Southern Africa Insurers (OESAI), driving transformation across 15 countries. She champions sustainability, inclusivity, and capacity building, and has positioned OESAI as a signatory to the Nairobi Declaration on Sustainable Insurance, where she co-chairs the Learning & Development Sub-Committee.

Passionate about empowering youth and women, Rose spearheads initiatives such as the Regional Insurance Quiz, served as Patron of Young Insurance Professionals (YIPs Africa) from 2022 to August 2025, co-founded Kenya Women in Insurance (KWIIN), and mentors through its Inuka Program. She is also a mentor with the Women Leadership in Insurance Africa initiative.

Dr Phocas Nyandwi

Dr Phocas Nyandwi has over 25 years of experience in the Insurance and Reinsurance Industry. He started his career in direct insurance in Burundi, where he worked for over 10 years in various managerial positions in non-life and life. In 2008, he joined Kenya Reinsurance Corporation (Kenya Re) as a non-life underwriter in charge of francophone markets. He joined Africa Re in 2010 in the Nairobi Regional Office where he worked for 9 years before being appointed as Director of Central Operations and Special Risks at the Head Office in Lagos (Nigeria) from 1 August 2019. After 5 years in this position, he was appointed as Regional Director of the Nairobi Regional Office from 01 July 2024.

He holds a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from the United States International University – Africa (USIU-A) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Insurance from the African Insurance Institute of Tunisia (IAA). Jean-Alain is an insurance professional with extensive experience of practising on the African and European scenes.  After starting his career in insurance with Island General Insurance (Mauritius) in 1994, he moved to Munich Re in 1998, and has evolved from a technical role in underwriting and claims for Marine (initially) and other Non-Life (General) classes of insurance business, to assuming a leadership role involving reinsurance underwriting and client management in Sub-Saharan African markets.

Since 2018, he works for reinsurance broking firm Ellgeo Re (Mauritius) Ltd, after having headed the Corporate Business division at Swan General Ltd (Mauritius), for two years.  Jean-Alain is passionate about insurance and its role in the sustainable development of the African continent.  He thrives on leadership challenges, and enjoys to see creativity at play be it professionally, leisurely or in arts.

Mr Janfar Abdulai

Janfar Abdulai, a 40-year-old Mozambican national, serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Empresa Moçambicana de Seguros (EMOSE, SA). An accomplished economist, he has made significant contributions to Mozambique’s financial and public sectors. From 2020 to 2022, he held the position of Minister of Transport and Communications, where he played a pivotal role in promoting national infrastructure development and improving connectivity across the country. Prior to his ministerial appointment, Abdulai worked at the Central Bank of Mozambique, contributing to economic policy formulation, and at the National Energy Fund between 2011 and 2012.

His academic involvement includes work at the Centre for Economics and Management Studies at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, where he advanced research, teaching, and economic management initiatives. Alex is the Managing Director of BK Insurance Ltd. He is responsible for the development of strategy, strategy implementation, management and overall performance of the company. He coordinates the company operations & oversees internal control systems. He has the duty to implement management information systems capable of sustaining growth, efficiency and effectiveness in the company’s operations. He is accountable for growth and sustainability of the company.

He joined Bank of Kigali in 2010 as a Legal Services Manager. He later, as a member of Senior Management headed Departments of Legal Services and Loan Recoveries, a position he held until 2016 when he became The Managing Director of BK General Insurance Ltd.

Alex started the taste of insurance industry while in Rwanda Social Security Board where he was a key member of the team in charge of modernizing the Social Security industry. He was the Head of Quality Assurance and a State Attorney in Rwanda Social Security Board. Tarupiwa Tarupiwa is the Managing Director of Emeritus Reinsurance (Pvt) Ltd Zimbabwe, bringing with him over 28 years of insurance/reinsurance industry experience and the marketing of services spanning across the African continent. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business studies (BBS), an MBA, both from the University of Zimbabwe, an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII) of London by examination.

He is a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Zimbabwe (FIIZ) and an Alumni of the London Business School (LBS) having successfully completed the Senior Executive Programme (SEP115) covering various leadership issues including strategy, leadership, Change and Impact. Outside of the group, Tarupiwa sits on the board of Stalap Investments (Pvt) Ltd Zimbabwe. Tarupiwa joined the ZimRe Group in 1997 and rose through the ranks to current position of Managing Director. Before being appointed to Managing Director he previously occupied the roles of Executive Director – Reinsurance, Operations Executive, Acting Managing Director, General Manager amongst other roles within the group.

Mr Jonan Kisakye

Jonan Kisakye is the Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Insurers’ Association (UIA), where he is driving the Association’s transformation into a dynamic, impact-driven organization. He has over 15 years of experience in the insurance industry, spanning both public and private sectors, with a strong focus on strategy, training, and institutional development. He previously served as Deputy Principal of the Insurance Training College and was instrumental in transitioning the Insurance Institute of Uganda into a public institution. Jonan has led several national and regional projects in insurance, microinsurance, bancassurance, and risk management, including work with regulators such as URBRA.

Jonan is the Chairman of the African Network of Insurers’ Associations (ANIA) and serves on several boards, including Uganda Re, the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE), and the Uganda Chamber of Energy and Minerals (UCEM). He is the Seretary of the Insurance Consortium for Oil and Gas Uganda (ICOGU), Chairs the Technical Working Committee for the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme (UAIS) under the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED), and is a member of the

depth of experience and strong industry insight have positioned him as a forward-thinking leader within the sector. Since taking the helm at AAR Insurance, Justine has accelerated transformation across the business, delivering bold structural shifts and market-shaping growth.

He spearheaded the licensing of AAR Uganda as a full General Insurer and steered AAR Kenya’s evolution into a comprehensive general insurance provider, positioning the Group for regional competitiveness and long-term sustainability. Francis is a Chartered Insurer and an Associate of both the Chartered Insurance institute of London and Insurance Institute of Kenya. He has previously held a series of management positions at reputable insurance firms in Kenya before he joined Continental Re’s Kenyan subsidiary as head of operations and Risk management in 2013. He was later appointed the Managing Director of Continental Reinsurance for the Botswana subsidiary in November 2019.

Mrs. REGINE AKAYEZU is the Regional Director of SOCIETE COMMERCIALE GABONAISE DE REASSURANCE (SCG-RE), Regional Office in Rwanda, a reinsurance company with operations all over Africa and Headquarters in Gabon. The company started in 2012 as an initiative from the Gabonese state and local insurance companies in Gabon. The regional office in Rwanda was opened in July 2022 to support its client base in the Eastern and Southern African insurance markets.

She is a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting Sciences from the National University of Rwanda and has more than 10 years of experience in the reinsurance industry.

Her career in reinsurance started in Kenya with an internship at African Reinsurance Corporation, Nairobi Regional Office and later joined East Africa Reinsurance Company as Assistant Underwriter for Francophone Markets. She later joined Klapton, Nairobi office and rose in rank within the company to hold the position of Chief Underwriter in charge of developing business in East Africa before joining SCG-RE regional office in Rwanda.

Her joy is to network with people in the insurance and reinsurance industry all over the world and give reinsurance capacity for the development of the African insurance industry. She is passionate about sustainable insurance and currently building herself in that area to offer solutions to the industry.

A Consultant to the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), Webster is a distinguished leader with an inspiring track record of over 20 years in the (re)insurance sector holding several senior roles. He has consistently demonstrated exceptional visionary and strategic acumen and a passion for driving innovation. He is skilled in strategic management, underwriting, claims, financial risk, operations management, risk management, customer relationship management, strategic partnerships, and new product design and development.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (FCII) and holds a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from Heriot-Watt University. He also holds a Master’s degree in Strategic Planning and another Master’s in Business Administration, from Heriot-Watt University. Furthermore, Webster has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance with Honours from the University of Zambia (UNZA), in addition to the Diploma in Insurance Studies from the Zambia Insurance Business College Trust (ZIBCT). Dr. Twaambo is also a prolific and published writer, public speaker, and philanthropist. He has penned three influential books. His second edition won the 2018 Best Book on Insurance by the Africa Insurance Organisation (AIO).

Ronald has worked for the insurance industry in Uganda and the East African Region with experience spanning over 15 years. He has worked for international brands such as UAP-Old Mutual and Britam Kenya. His expertise is in areas of strategic and operational management in Insurance and has worked as an independent consultant for firms such as Summit Consulting Ltd &  Crowe Hath International providing support in risk management and advisory services.

He is a Facilitator with the Insurance Institute of Uganda focusing on the Diploma in Insurance Program and the Chief Executive Officer for Sky Reinsurance Brokers Ltd the second licensed local reinsurance brokers in Uganda offering diverse alternative risk solutions with focus on reinsurance with markets in Uganda and East Africa.

Ms Patty Karuaihe-Martin,

Ms. Karuaihe-Martin is a seasoned business and finance professional with over 30 years of experience in the financial and insurance industry, including Senior Partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC). She is the 2nd Vice-President of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI). Patty is the immediate past President of the Africa Insurance Organization (AIO) and UNEP-FI Global Steering Committee Co-Chair, Invictae Vice President for Southern Africa and NAMW IFI Director.

Patty was recently awarded the Top 50 Women in Insurance in Africa award by AIO and PILA (Professional Insurance Ladies Association), the Top 10 Women to Watch in the Insurance Sector award by Angaza (Africa Women in Banking, Finance & Investment), and in 2023 she was shortlisted as Top 50 for the Africa Financial Industry Summit Awards in the Woman Leader by the Africa Financial Industry Summit (AFIS).
